The futility of expectation

The future is never what I think it will be, unless by some fluke of chance.

I am starkly reminded of that in this moment, as I sit in my desert retreat, and share 450 acres with five other humans. There is no generator running this afternoon. There are no screaming children, no mouths to feed, no work to be done other than tending to our individual needs. Yet I dreaded this very moment because I thought it would certainly be the same driving high energy of the previous weeks, that there to be another 30 people here, working 12 hour days: tractor running, cement mixer grinding, chainsaw screaming, generator humming.

What a waste of energy it is to fear or anticipate.
